Scott Fleming Mackay

(February 27, 1949 - December 4, 2010)

Calais, VT

Scott Fleming Mackay, of East Calais, passed away Saturday, December 4, 2010. Born February 27, 1949 in Hartford, CT, he was the son of Reinald and Rubye (Williams) Mackay. He moved to Vermont during the sixties, graduating Class of ’67 at MHS. Following graduation he traveled the USA before enlisting in the Navy. He served 5 years in the military, during which time he circumnavigated the globe twice. Upon returning to Vermont he purchased land in East Calais and built a home with his own hands. He and his wife Diane were married on their property in May of 1980. He worked for over a decade as a diesel mechanic, eventually moving on to join Vermont Fire Extinguisher. He was an accomplished mechanic and carpenter and an avid outdoorsman. When he wasn’t building something new or fixing something old, he was often found on his Harley-Davidson, or simply being around family and friends. One of his greatest joys in life was making people laugh, and he always had a smile and a kind word. He loved spending time at deer camp where he was constantly surrounded by fellow hunters and friends who were his second family. After retirement he planned on making his living sawing lumber with his portable sawmill. Next to his family he loved most being outside and passed away doing what he loved, hunting deer.

He is survived by his wife, Diane Mackay of East Calais and his three children, Kimberly and Todd of Bend, Oregon and Adam recently of Maui, Hawaii and his dog Storm. His sister Judith Lovell and her husband Richard of Sabattus, Maine. A Memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm, Sunday, December 12th at Trinity United Methodist Church, 137 Main Street, Montpelier.

In remembering Scott’s love for his pets the family asks that donations be made, in lieu of flowers to Central Vermont Humane Society, PO Box 608, Montpelier, VT 05601.
